Harvest is Underway for Lewis Wines

Light towers were being raised at eleven o’clock last Saturday night in anticipation of the Lewis Wines harvest crew at Round Mountain Vineyard in the Texas Hill Country.  Harvesting in the coolest time of day, planting Spanish and Portuguese varieties well-suited to Central Texas’ climate, and transitioning to organic growing methods are just a few things that make the approach behind Lewis Wines unique in the growing landscape of Texas wineries.

Doug Lewis and Duncan McNabb, co-owners and winemakers, both in their mid-twenties, met in college and worked making some barrels on the side while Doug was employed at Pedernales Cellars.  Building from there, Lewis Wines opened in February of this year focusing on producing boutique wines made with minimal intervention from 100% Texas fruit.  In years like this, it can be a challenge to maintain those standards, with many producers looking beyond Texas’ borders to make up for the losses at home, but their dedication to make true Texas wine is unwavering.

Visitors can find Doug and Duncan most days of the week offering personal tastings by appointment at the small winery just west of Johnson City in the Hill Country. The property was recently planted with vines of their own that will add to steadier harvests in years to come.  It’s time to discover a new generation of Texas wine!
