(STONEWALL) – Pedernales Cellars has announced that a trio of new wines – including new versions of a popular red and popular white blend, and a brand-new white blend utilizing five different varietals – will be bottled next week and are set to debut in the winery’s tasting room within the next few weeks.
The wines to be released include:
2012 GSM (Grenache-Syrah-Mourvedre), the latest iteration of the winery’s most popular red blend (using 54% Syrah, 32% Mourvedre, and 14% Grenache)
2013 Vino Blanco, a refresh of the winery’s signature white blend, and
2013 Cinco, a brand new white blend for the winery, combining Chenin Blanc, Roussanne, Viognier, Blanc du Bois, and Albarino.
The wines are Pedernales Cellars’ first offerings of the 2014 calendar year, following a year in which the winery enjoyed accolades from a number of noteworthy wine competitions (including the Dallas Morning News and TexSom Wine Competition, the Long Beach Grand Cru Wine Competition, and the Lyon International Wine Competition), and expanded the number of stores and restaurants in which their wines are available.
Because 2013 provided challenges to a great number of Texas grape growers, and because Pedernales Cellars is committed to creating wines exclusively from Texas grapes, the creation of the Cinco blend is not only a chance for Pedernales Cellars to create a white blend capturing the Texas terroir in the entirely new way, but allows Pedernales Cellars to account for the low-yield harvest of individual white varietal grapes – most notably Viognier – while holding to its principles.
“While 2013 didn’t give us the harvest we needed to create a Viognier, especially one as popular as ours has been in past years, we’re very pleased with how the Cinco and Vino Blanco turned out,” said David Kuhlken, winemaker and co-owner of Pedernales Cellars. “The Cinco gave us a chance to take varietals we’re familiar with, such as Viognier and Albarino, and marry them with varietals we’ve been eager to use.”
Past vintages of the Pedernales Cellars GSM has incorporated flavors of berries topped with dark chocolate, while past vintages of the Vino Blanco balanced tropical fruit, grapefruit and citrus notes.
In addition to all of the wines being available in the tasting room for purchase (and as part of the winery’s tasting menu), the GSM will be available at a number of stores throughout Texas, including Whole Foods locations in Austin, San Antonio, Houston and Dallas.
In addition to releasing the new wines, upcoming events at the winery include a wine and chocolate tasting on Feb. 14 and 15 (to commemorate Valentine’s Day), and a CASI (Chili Appreciation Society International) Cookoff on March 1 and 2 to celebrate Texas Independence Day.
