Texas has a rich grape history! According to the Texas Wine and Grape Growers Association, Texas is home to the first vineyard in North America.  Started by Franciscan priests circa 1662, vineyards continued to spread as European settlers brought more grapevine cuttings to mission outposts across the state “further developing the industry through the 1800s.”

With over 4,400 acres of vineyard farmland in commercial production, Texas is ranked as the fifth largest grape wine producer in the United States.  American Viticulture Areas (AVAs) are grape growing areas officially designated by the U.S. Department of Treasury through the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau, and they range in a number of sizes.  The first AVA recognized is Bell Mountain, 5 square acres in the Hill Country.  The two largest AVAs in Texas are the High Plains AVA which encompasses over 8 million acres and the Texas Hill Country AVA spanning over 9 million acres.  The Texas Hill Country AVA is the second largest AVA in the nation! More grape growing information can be found in the Texas Grape Growers Manual available online.
