Llano Estacado is Texas’ best-selling premium wine. In 2000, McPherson Cellars was created to honor winemaker Kim McPherson’s father, Dr. Clinton “Doc” McPherson, a founder and pioneer of the modern Texas wine industry. Built in the old Coca-Cola bottling plant in the historic Depot District, the winery offers a great place to relax and enjoy a glass of wine, either in our tasting room or lush courtyard. Kim believes in “planting to the land” so his focus is on Rhone and Italian varietals that thrive on the Texas High Plains. Pheasant Ridge estate-grown wines are named for the wild birds often seen in the vineyard. The vineyard, planted in 1979, is one of the oldest in Texas and includes Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Pinot Noir, Chenin Blanc and Chardonnay. Recognized nationally for quality since its first releases in 1983, Pheasant Ridge wines have been called the French wines of Texas. They are made in blended styles more typical of France than of the United States. Pheasant Ridge Cabernets are consistently among the oldest in Texas when released. The tasting room is open for free tours and tastings. Head north from Lubbock on I-27, take exit 14, FM 1729 east for two miles to FM 2600, then south one mile.

Val Verde Winery was established in 1883 by Italian immigrant Frank Qualia who began making wine for family and friends from the Lenoir grape. In 1933, his son Louis Qualia introduced the Herbemont grape, originally from France, to Texas. Today, the winery is the full-time occupation of third generation vintner Thomas Qualia. Its Don Luis Tawny Port has won medals from Houston to New York. It is the oldest bonded winery in Texas and was honored by the Family Land Heritage Program at the Texas Department of Agriculture for single-family ownership of the vineyards for more than 110 years. Family pride, longevity and innovation in the wine industry make Val Verde Winery a Texas landmark.
